AURA

400m walk from City Hall MRT
recommended by Eileen Chan
Located on the 6th floor of the national gallery is AURA. The sky lounge offers a beautiful panoramic view of the iconic Singapore skyline. The main dining restaurant is however located a floor below (No view of the city scape).
As shared from the staff, Aura was in the 2016 Michelin recommended list and according to staff, which was revealed later on, that it was their Sister restaurant which received the 2017 Michelin star.
Aura which offers Italian cuisine is quite the dining treat especially adding a visit to the National Gallery, which was originally Singapore’s City Hall.

Ordered On:
28thSept2017
Complimentary serving of warm Focaccia bread
*Nice warm bread, but I felt the black based balsamic/oil dipping dishes were a silly aesthetic choice. We couldn’t even tell what was inside.*
Roasted Foie Gras with Nashi Pear, Fig compote and Duck Jus 32SGD

*A classic pairing and quality product. The crisp freshness of the pan seared Nashi Pear brings a brightness to the dish, offsetting the sweet Fig compote. A sure win favorite and classical pairing. Small but gratifying serve.*
Imberico de Bellota Ham with Tomato Jam and Almond Cream 38SGD
*Though it says its a Bellota but the nutty deep flavors synonymous with Bellota kinda gets masked by the rest of the song and dance. The onion powder on which it was served on was interesting and gave a textural element. For a great educational experience on the difference between ham cures, the Jamon experience in Barcelona along Las Ramblas is not to be missed.*
Ricotta Cheese Ravioli with eggplant, tomato and Beluha Capers 32SGD

*A complete disappointment. Insufficient seasoning and more cheese would have perhaps played out better. The capers weren’t bold enough in its flavors and an order to be passed over.*
Italian Seabass with White and Green Asparagus and Saffron Sauce 45SGD

*Good reviews for the crispy skin from others visit but didn’t get a sample off this tine.*
Grilled Octopus with Smoked Peppers, Eggplant and Black Olives 45SGD
*Amazing! By far one of the top preparations of octopus. Where one under does it, its tough and over doing it also renders it tough. The sweet spot was right on the money and a generous. Each cut was like eating the fatty, caramelized portion of steak fat without the fat! Tender juicy morsels and a well worth it order! The smoked pepper purée at the bottom was a nice sweet accent to compliment the dish in its entirety. Close to and another octopus cook competitor goes to London’s Duck and Waffle.*
Grilled Iberico Pork Chop with tomato petals and burnt onion cream 45SGD

*Apart from a beautifully cooked tender piece of pork chop prepared well with burnt onion cream, the dish itself was a little underwhelming.*
Kalingo Chocolate and Earl Grey Dome with Raspberry Cream 18SGD
*Am no expert on desserts but the tempered chocolate is smooth, rich and decadent. There may have been a hint of rum as well. One for chocolate lovers . The earl grey was now where to be found.*
Tiramisu with coffee Cream and chocolate Crumble SGD18

*An alright tiramisu*
Baked Cheese Cake with Lemon Espuma and Strawberries SGD18

*The chefy Espuma was a little bit of a distraction from the cheese cake. They could have just made a good lemon cheese cake as opposed to having two different elements. The lemon over powered the cheese cake, which in itself lacked the oomph expected from a creamy cheese cake.*
X2 coffees x1 draft beer
Total about 98SGD/pax
Food wise there were some hits and misses. The sure wins were the Foie Gras and defiantly the grilled octopus.

Only because they are part of the Michelin guide and not to mention higher price point, that expectations for Aura are higher. Please note that we dined at the upper deck with the view of Singapore skyline as opposed to the main dining hall downstairs. The dining upstairs was very dimly lit hence the harsher shots of the food taken.

By Michelin expectations, service on the upper deck was very lacking. When querying what dishes were recommended, staff rattled of exactly what was written on the menu. They weren’t selling the dish on a personal note, nor its flavor profile or intricate preparation. They weren’t even sure of the elements on the dish served.

On the initial service of the appetizer, service staff placed the dish without explanation of what’s what. They did however improve service thereafter having highlighted to them the lack of it.

The long and short of it, if dining at Aura, advice is to stick only the downstairs dining area without the view. Although both entities are part of the same establishment, the upstairs service was hugely lacking in comparison to downstairs (as experienced by fellow patron on a previous visit).

Downstairs's front of house explained and shared what I felt to be excuses. She said that upstairs is a different vibe/concept to the main dining hall and when queried if its acceptable by Michelin standards, it was later explained to me that its actually their sister restaurant which won the one star and not this particular branch.

*The dining space down stiars*
Stick to downstairs dining for the proper dining experience. Honestly if without the skyline view, its probably not that worth to be dining there. Go for the recommended mains reviewed and pass on the desserts.

Togoshi-Ginza
2 Stops from Takanawadai Station!

The Togoshi Ginza shopping street measures 1.3km and is best known to be the longest shopping street in the Kanto Region. The place is closed of to traffic from 2pm/3pm till 6/7pm in the evenings.
Located at Togoshi station, a mere two stops away from Takanawadai station, Togoshi Gindai shopping street has a lively atmosphere with lots of shops selling an array of random stuff. These range from local produce, jewellery, second hand shops and also offering a decent range of eats. The longer end (east side) exit of Togosho Ginza shopping stretch features more local stuff as opposed to the short side (west side) which features more fancy eats. Each side having its different charms.

There were two amazing standouts on this food/shopping trail. The first goes to the, made-famous by prime minister of Japan visit, Toriandenee. The spicy knee cartilage is the addictive must order.
Toriandenee for Fried Chicken and Beer

A great fry, full flavour featuring what I think is the connecting white soft bone between the wings and the drumlet. Only the best stuff here. We were seriously contemplating to go for another round at one of the best chicken and beers place enjoyed. Beers here are cheap going at ¥400 a pint. Sake and bourbon mix were also going at about the same price. Their regular chicken fries were okay but not great. Pictured were 100g each orders at ¥300 each.

The second joint which had one of the best char siew in ramen was over at Hayato.

Hayato for Char Siew Ramen!

Usually Char Siew is a little tough and lacks flavouring but here the Char Siew marinate really shown through. The soup is nice, thick and rich. The noodles to me were a little on the softer side but still enjoyable and overall comparable to Ichiran and/or even Ippudo ramen. The table side ice cold green tea is pleasantly refreshing.

Whilst along the shopping street (East side) don’t forget to pop into Togoshi Hachiman shrine, which is off the main Ginza shopping street.

Hidden among local residence, its a quaint space which is synonymous with Japan, having the traditional blending beautifully with the new.

Togoshi Ginza is well worth a visit to see where locals go to. A great mix of stalls, local produce (fruit purchases and grocery shopping) and much more. Great for a variety of eats and a must to try the spicy knee cartilage.

Tsukigi Tama Sushi
400m walk from Grand Prince Hotel
Came recommended by the Hotel staff as the only Sushi place in the area

Click here for ABBA location of Tsukiji Tama Sushi, 京急ショッピングプラザウィング高輪WESTB1 4 Chome-10-18 Takanawa, 港区 Tokyo 108-0074, Japan
Tama sushi is located a stone throw walk from Shinagawa station. Located on the basement one of Wing Takanawa west, comes this “okay’ sushi joint which came recommended by the hotel staff as the only one in the area.

The entire Shinagawa area seems to tender mostly to the expat community with major corporate companies like Microsoft and Canon having offices in the area. There seems to be a larger selection of main stream eats. Tama Sushi was the only Sushi joint found in the area.

Ordered On:
20Sept2017
Set1 ¥2800

Set2 ¥2100

Tuna Jaw ¥1000

*A worth while order. Its broiled very nicely and served together with the fresh sweet radish is a really nice pairing. A small mound of salt would have been nice but a good dish worth ordering.*
A-lacarte orders of medium fatty Tuna, amber jack and scallop sushi.

2 draft beers ¥600 each
Total fed 2 at ¥9600
Not worth. For this kind of pricing, one is better off going to Eddoko Sushi(Narita village) for better quality. Sure here at Tama Sushi you maybe able to order more for the same pricing but the sushi servings are significantly smaller compared to Eddoko.
The sushi is not off bad standing actually. Their amber jack/scallop and Ottoro were pretty okay. However if one is looking for a reasonably priced Sushi chain located all around Tokyo, Sushi Zanmai (multiple stores and open 24hr chain) is a good one to get one’s sushi fix.

One definitely needs to get out of Shinigawa to find more local eats. A possible place to explore, located two stops away is the Togoshi Ginza shopping district (known to be one of the longest shopping street in the Kanto region). The place offers local eats and interesting shopping. (Sushi options here are mostly limited to take aways. A must try there is their amazing fried chicken cartilage and beer. The best had thus far!)

Block M
recommend by Derrick Cheong
Block M offers up great Indonesian eats at very affordable rates. The sweet black sauce is an absolute must and drizzled over the warm rice is fantastic, a great recommendation by Derrick Cheong (original posting listed below.)

The joint is really quite small but arrival on a weekday at 1330hrs, seating wasn't an issue at all, but others have advice otherwise.
Ordered On:
03Oct2017
Grill Lamb Rib Combo 12AUD
+3AUD top up comes with Egg,
Drink and a chicken/oxtail soup

*With a three heart rating who can go wrong with this order? Indonesian style BBQ flavors with quality Australian lamb. What's even better is that the soft cartilage at the ends which are to die for! A worth while order which at 12AUD is honestly a steal. The add ons although very reasonable is a bit of toss up. The soup that comes with isn't much to scream about and the main already comes with a soup (Hence the double soup pictured). Both of which are a little on the salty side. Their Chili gets the Indonesian quality assurance!*
Mixed Grill platter 7AUD
*Don't even bother. Stick to the mains. Nothing to scream about*
Indonesian Fried Rice
 Fed 2 at 36AUD Total
Block M is a relatively small sized diner offering really good value eats. Beef ribs was sold out when we arrived and the cook time was relatively fast actually for the lamb.

Portions are huge here from what we saw. The fried cat fish looked popular as did the classic Ayam (Chicken) Bakar dishes. A great recommendation by Derrick Cheong and a must go for city eats. Another Asian recommended on a previous trip, which, like Block M, offers great value and Asian eat is GJ Grill (Offering authentic, amazing Philippine pork roasts!)
- Derrick Cheong Contribution-
"Probably one of the best kept secret in Melbourne. Blok M along little Burke street serves authentic Indonesian food at very reasonable price.

For price range between $A10 - 18, you can get grilled whole chicken thigh, beef ribs, lamb ribs or one whole fish!, that comes with oxtail soup and rice served with sambal Balachan.
Portion is bigger compare to what I had in Jakarta perhaps because its in Australia. Taste wise, I ordered the lamb ribs and it's perfectly chargrilled and tender. Let go some of those sweet black sauce over your plain rain, couple with its sambal, super yummy!! Try not to go during lunch or dinner time cause this place is packed. Water provided.

Btw, apologies to all my Muslim colleagues, your secret is out, but good thing must share mah. Lolx" - Derrick Cheong
Tips: the grill beef ribs and lamb ribs takes about 20mins so do order something else if you are hungry.

Fortune Five Chinese restaurant
Opens 10.30am-3pm and 3pm-10pm

Located in North bridge and right beside San Churros (for the best hot chocolate so far), lays Fortune Five Chinese restaurant. A popular locale for dim sum that also filled up within the hour. Others have also reported they are known for their roasted duck as well.
Ordered on:
08Sept2017
Pineapple bun

*Pretty okay. Good texture but could have faired better on the filling. Pretty average.*
Bean curd wrapped meat

Steamed bbq pork bun

Zha leong (Fried dough fritter wrapped in rice flour.)

*Their sauce isn’t too sweet. Defiantly go for seafood filled one. A great thin sheet over a still crispy interior.*
Fried salt and pepper squid

*Really, really good. Not too oily and the flavors from the green and red chilli were really subtle. We were so very very tempted to go for a reorder.*
Prawn chive dumpling
Egg and milk custard

*Amazing must order especially fresh out of the oven! The crust is crispy, flaky and not at all oily. The custard fillings were best enjoyed when still hot. By far one of the best egg tarts had and can give Hong Kong’s Tai cheong bakery a run for its money. A must order!*
Xiao Long Bao*Alright. It could do well with more soup in the wrapping.*
XO carrot cake
*Pretty interesting. They pan fry the edges off nicely for a bit of crust. The inside are moist and flavourful.*
Garlic pork rib
*Really soft and tender pork ribs with that aromatic garlic flavors. One of the better ones had and as memorable as the stand out pork rib dim sum in Fung Shing Located in HongKong.
Beef ball

*Nothing special. Okay only.*
Fed4 at AUD22 each
Additional order of salt egg custard bun. The filling was good but the bun itself was too thick. Could have done much better with a thinner exterior. The best had so far is still from Fu Xing Sharks fin restaruant from HKG.
The stand outs over here were the garlic pork ribs, the fried salt and pepper squid and their amazing fresh baked Portuguese tarts. A must reorder!

In comparison to New Moon, Fortune Five offers greater variety and are more frequent with their push carts to entice you. Greater variety and quality hands down. The downside is that this place has got a later opening time at 10.30am. 1hr later than New Moon and it did get a bit stuffy on our visit as the airflow lacked.

Pretty fair value and can match up to some Hong Kong Dim Sum joints
Visited on 15April22 the new Wing at Fortune Five!
*Super solid roast pork. Can't go wrong really and QUALITY standard like those in Hongkong!*
15April22
*Still as good as ever in the new extension wing! Their egg tart still an epic home run!*
