Florence Firenzel

Florence is famous for its history: a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time it is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called "the Athens of the Middle Ages".

Roy. "Departed the night before arriving in Florence for a diner and a night stay. Started the touring the next day at 10am and back in Milan by 10pm that night.""
Getting There
From Milan: From Milan Central Station or Milano Porta Garibaldi
there are many trains to Florence FIRENZEL.

- Fast train took about 2 hours average and cost EU50 each way on the second class ticket. Check for the fast train timing for better time management. An Overnight stay will be recommended, check online for cheap accommodation around the train station.
If the ticket had seat assigned no validation of the ticket is required.

Places to visit in Firenzel:  All the places below are reachable by walking from the train station. Recommend to purchase the return ticket first before sightseeing. You have to get a queue number to purchase the ticket.
No lining up required, if you choose to pay by the credit card from the machine, you will need your credit card pin number.

Expect to wait for 45min or longer before your number is called.

If you are going PISA, purchase the train ticket from the souvenir shop in the station. it will cost 8EU each way and you will need to validate these tickets. No seats allocation. Do not expect the souvenir shop people to speak English. Simple word like PISA, and hand language showing 2 or to and fro may do the job.

Florence’s Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Il Duomo)
is the icon of the city and one of the most recognizable symbols of Renaissance architecture.

The admission to the cathedral is free. However, there are fees to visit the dome (€10) and the crypt, which includes the archaeological ruins of Santa Reparata. Visitors are required to climb 463 steps to the top of the dome and hence a good climbing attire is advised.

View from the top of Dome. with the ticket you can climb the bell tower too, however best to save energy for the main dome. Climb takes about 15-20 min

Piazza della Signoria

Ponte Vecchio

Walking down the river will take you back the Train Station. Don't be too tempted by the jewellery shops.

If you start the sightseeing at about 10am, you will be able to catch a 2 plus or 3 plus pm train to PISA comfortably.

PISA
Getting There

There are many trains from Florence to PISA. Fastest train takes about 50min while the average train ride is about 1h 15min.
Hence if you miss the fast train, it does not matter much to take a slower train. Refer to Florence for the train ride guide. Remember to validate the ticket. We bought Mc Donald to eat on board. Since its an open ticket, its best to purchase the return ticket while in Florence as well. The train ticket says valid for 6 hours but we are not sure whether can we reuse the ticket for our return trip. Look up the train timing earlier for all the available train timing as there are no wifi available in train station.

Arrival in PISA: If you have only half a day left for PISA, its best to take a bus to the PISA tower. Walking may takes more than 30min about 1.5km

Check out this site on how to trave to PISA tower http://www.livornonow.com/how_to_get_from_pisa_centrale_train_station_to_the_leaning_tower_of_pisa

PISA Tower: reference http://www.livornonow.com/going_to_pisa_by_train_from_livorno

As you enter the PISA tower ground remember to purchase the ticket that allows you to climb the PISA tower and visit the cathedral. There is a timing assigned when you purchase your ticket for your tower climb. Before you queue for the climb, remember to deposit your bags at the building down the PISA tower, ask the guy at the tower if unsure. The climb up the tower is less tiring than the DUOMO in Florence.

Getting Back

Returning back to Milan:. We reckoned the fastest way to go back Milan from PISA is back to Florence then fast train back to Milan.
There is train service from PISA to Milan  but the train ride will take more than 4 hours and the train ticket could be more expensive.
Train from PISA to Florence takes about an hour and thereafter an 2hrs train from Florence back to Milan. There should be enough time for you to grab dinner in Florence if you get the timing right. There are many Ristorante near the Florence train station.
