Saveur
(Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station)

part of the Saveur Group, Cathay Branch
Saveur, now a group with other spin-off outlets aims to offer french food at affordable prices and I must say they definitely delivered. Recommended to myself by Andrew.T. I had known of Saveur from their Far East outlet, but never ventured in. This will be the first, and defiantly not the last in trying their other spin-offs as well.
Saveur sits conveniently on the ground floor of The Cathay, having an industrial feel to the whole place, with cold chairs and cement benches.

x2 Dinner Menu sets
Starters
Salmon Confit

*Why one should sous-vide everything. Absolutely delectable and tender piece of fish. Not exactly served raw, but cured/cooked so gently. The chives give that spring to the dish, as does the shaved onions and apple-slaw on which it sits on. The capers don't really add much to the dish, but the thin crispy salmon skin was a nice textural component and an overall stunning dish.*
Foei Gras-Lentils

*I thought the Lentils wouldn't work with Foei Gras but it did! The salty, rich, creaminess from the Foei Gras is balanced with the gritty, lentils. An interesting combi and taste way better than it looks.*
Mains
Beef Bourguignon

*Not my preference on the dish, but prepared to a T. The red wine sauce was impeccable and the side was definitely no run-of-the-mill potato salad. A warm potato salad that's folded in with a cheese of sorts, delivering a subtle, creaminess and richness. A pleasant surprise and the perfect serving.*
Duck Confit

*Their signature and I must say one of the best I've had. The duck isn't too dry, and the velvet smooth mash is amazing! The mushrooms/umami factor really helped the dish along and I loved the use of sweet mandarin oranges to accent the dish. Delicious!*
Desserts
Cookies and Milk

*Interesting concept. I kinda of got it after the fact as a deconstructed version of cookies and cream. Cold cookie ice-cream with frothed-up warm milk. The milk adds to the creaminess and hidden under, rum raisins along with nut brittle. A smart deconstruction.*
Chocolate and Hazelnut

*Simple moose that's presented elegantly with rice crispies, crushed nuts, and mashed up raspberries. A classic pairing and a nice way to end of the meal. This serving size was huge and almost a to-share portion*
Dinner Set at 29.90SGD/set

Additional Al-la-carte order of:
Saveur's Pasta

Chilli Oi, Finely-chopped kombu, minced pork sauce, chives and sakura ebi 4.9SGD
*Another interesting take. I love the Japanese inspiration behind this dish, and it works. It like a japan version of Angel Hair Aglio Olio. Pretty good and a respectable serving size. Somewhere between a starter and a main. Best to order one for sharing.*
Total 78.50SGD Fed 2

One of the few, enjoyable meals that I've gotten to have lately, while on the hunt for eats in Singapore. The food really is of good standing. Creative, well executed and in my opinion undervalued for the quality/creativity one is getting, but that just makes it great and more affordable to the people! Wining for the consumer!
Though the food on it own was of great standing, there's a mismatch with its service staff, and ambience. Staff on our visit could know their product more in-depth and up-sell it, but this can be forgiven as many were assumed to be part timers. The place had more of a bistro, grunge cafe feel to the place, but the food could have definitely been enjoyed in a different setting. (But that's talking the overall experience.)

However, looking at food alone, and the overall dining experience (ambience and service staff) set aside, then this affordable chain and its spin off are definitely worth exploring. They've defiantly been successful over the years and with food like this, its no surprise they've gotten this far. I'll will check out their other outlets for sure, if this is the food expected from their chain. As per their mantra, good affordable food for everyone.
