Fish Frenzy
(650m walk from Travel Lodge)

Rated 3.5 on Google out of 45reviews.

A nice homely interior, serving up local seafood produce.

Ordered On:

20Sep2015

Fish Frenzy AUD19.50

Two pieces of crumbled fish, three scallops and three calamari rings with chips.

*An upmarket packaging of fish and chips served by the waters*

Half doz Oysters (natural) AUD18.00

Grilled fresh Tasmanian Salmon AUD30

Fresh Tasmanian salmon served on garden salad.

*A little disappointing really. Salmon slices were over cooked and dry.*

Warm scallop salad served with Greek salad. AUD30

*Tasmanian Scallops are the stuff to have! Really indulgent and succulent, and come with a great sear on it. Absolutely delectable morsales*

Fed 2 Total AUD93
In a nice setting with pretty family friendly decor. Its not high end dining, but its no cheap eats either. Just parked by the waters, it is indeed picturesque. Other than the mind blowing scallops, the rest of the food was okay, with fairly standard fish and chips.

We later ordered some ice-cream at below Mure's Upper Deck, Victoria Dock, Hobart TAS 7000, Australia.
Large Solid scoops of ice-cream at only AUD3.50 each.

Ordered Rum and Rasin and Vienna Coffee. Only strong flavors here and it's the good stuff. Returned another day for Vienna Coffee and Ginger Ice Cream (other Ginger Ice cream that compares and is delicious came from Belgo, London.) and another day for Rockey Road.
It became our after dinner dessert place to go to. Giolitti, in Rome is the only other place that could draw me back for ice-cream over ice-cream again and again.

Graziers Grill
at Grarada Tavern

550m from MONA 3.5km from Cadbury Factory

A small enclave, with beers, wine spirits for sale as well as a small gambling den. An outpost/tavern that serves the community there.
Ordered On

21stSep2015

Rump Steak AUD25

*Good value rump steak though it could be done a little rarer. It does come with a nice creamy mushroom sauce and served with twice cooked potatoes. Will definitely try to replicate that :D*

Wallaby Burger AUD22

*No processed meat here. Full on steak cuts, served in the burger. Wallaby was found to be more tender than the beef. A great char with sweet onions together was fantastic and well worth the order.*

Total 47AUD Fed 2

An all right place for a good meal in the middle of nowhere, plus it's located opposite Tasmania Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and near Cadbury Factory.

Mako Seafood

Located by the water, this two-in-one joint offers fresh seafood for sale on its lower deck, and classic seafood eats on the upper deck.

Ordered On:

21stSep2015

1Dozen Oysters AUD19

*The cheapest oysters to be had in that area. Believe me, we did our scouting around in the Salamanca area!

1 Grilled Blue Eye AUD10

*The blue eye meat is a little on the dry side, and texturally like chicken breast. A little under seasoned but easily solved with the table salt.*

1 Green Salad AUD5

*Nicely dressed*

1 Fish Basket AUD12

*Possibly the most value for money order with

2 Scallops Fried AUD3.20

*Tasmanian scallops are really good and never a disappointment.*

2 Calamari AUD2.60

Total AUD52 Fed2

Cheap, quick and reasonably priced. The oysters here are so far the cheapest on the block (this block in Salamanca. Cheaper oysters are available but a drive away. Reviewed below).

Domino's
(150m from Travel Lodge Hobart)

Click here for ABBA location of nearest Domino's to Travel Lodge
An Aussie tradition is to have pizzas on pizzas Tuesdays! The only difference here in Hobart is that they have an all day 5AUD a pizza from a limited menu of 6. Probably the most value meal one is going to find anywhere.

Ordered On:
22Sep2015

Beef pizza and cheese and garlic pizza

AUD10 total Fed2

Open 6Days A Week

Mon-Sat 10am-9pm

Fancy a late night sushi? Open till late, this place serves up warm eats as well as passable sushi.

Ordered on:
22Sep2015

Shashimi platter 19AUD

*Relatively cheap Sashimi at passable standards. The probable equivalent would be supermarket takeaways.*

Prawn Roll Sushi 5AUD

*Rice is a little warm.*

Total 24AUD Fed2

Relatively cheap sushi thats open till late, to satisfy cravings that's just passable.

Hog's Breath Cafe

Another Aussie staple, and chain, Hogs Breath cafe was visited for old time sake. It's a 950m walk from Travel Lodge Hobart. Family style dining that's kid friendly. Click here for Hog's Breath Perth Review.

Ordered On:

23Sep2015

Mega Prime Rib Natural With Upgrade to Megacut AUD37.95x2

One of the best prepared prime ribs that I've had under the Hogs Breath Chain. Good marbling and its absolutely worth the upgrade to Megacut. (The 1AUD:1.02SGD exchange rate did help).

The Prime Rib could use a little more seasoning, but it's still worth the order. Prime Rib oozing from all corners after the meal. Special mention goes to the corn. Usually it's boiled to death but they cooked it just right, leaving the corn sweet and a bit of a crunch.

Dianne Sauce AUD2.20

Calamari Serve AUD4.95

*A soggy fry actually and it's quite surprising that squid rings at Mako and Fish Frnezy were way better. That again, this is after all a steak house that a seafood joint.*

Pure Blonde AUD6.50

Total 89.55AUD Fed2

A must go to eat for value priced prime ribs (The 1AUD:1.02SGD exchange rate did help). A trusted chain and need of the better quality controlled chains I've been to.

Bangor Wine and Oyster Shed
(midway stop from Hobart to Port Arthur 58.8km)

Located midway from Hobart to Port Arthur, a lucky find all thanks to mobile Internet. Absolutely stunning views, situated atop a hill in between Dunalley Bay and Blackman Bay. The view is unparalleled and stunning. The place for a stop over breakfast/lunch.

Ordered On:

24Sep2015

Natural Oysters 1Dozen AUD18

*Hmm maybe not as fresh even though they're right by the bay. We suspect they might have kept the oysters over night as there was some slime like liquid when pouring out the excess water. The fresh ones aren't as plump or as sweet as the ones from Get Shucked, reviewed above, on Bruny Island.*

Grilled Trio AUD10 Macadamia Pesto - Fresh Basil, macadamia nuts and fresh Parmesan grilled to order

*Not over cooked and perfectly done. Its all those fresh ad-ons really that bring the flavor!*

Lamb Pie AUD14

*Really good and meaty pie, with a flaky exterior and absolutely worth the order. Filling, warm and homely.*

Total AUD42 Fed 2

A good midway stop over point whilst en-route from Hobart to Port Arthur. Click here for Itinerary and review of Hobart - To Do.

Jack Greene

A very cool, kickback kinda atmosphere with Live performances coming on later in the night. We had ordered at about 6.30pm and orders were pretty much backed up with a 40min wait at least.

Ordered On:

24Sep2015

The American AUD15

Beef & Blue AUD17.50
*Very nicely done. A subtle blue cheese flavor that blanced just right*

Chips AUD5

Sauces AUD2

Total AUD39.50

Could it be? A burger that's up there and is at par or even possible to outdo my currently all time favorite burgers to be had at Pearl's Deluxe Burgers - San Fran?!
The patties here are nice, thick and done a medium rare. Really good quality Tasmanian  produce must be the key here. Their fries too were a stray from run of the mill fries. Nice  solid chunks, fried well and goes very well with their in house Aiolli Garlic (One of the best I've had and well worth the 1.50AUD price tag.

Top notch, in fact possibly contending for the best Burgers spot for me. I was even contemplating to coming back to try their other burgers, but unfortunately the meals available in Hobart were running short.

Pigeon Hole Opens

Mon-Sat

7.30am-4.30pm

Ordered On:

25Sep2015

Beef Short Rib, Wakame Butter, Carrot, Fermented Turnip AUD19.50
*Unbelievable. The most tender, and beautifully plated Beef Short Rib's I've ever tasted. Amazing! How to they even do it?*

Soft Baked Eggs New Season Asparagus, sorrel sauce, weston farm EVO&Toast AUD12.90

*Very refreshing and something that I'd like to replicate in future. Boiled just right, and the light asparagus, perfuming the entire dish.*
Chocolate Muffin 4AUD

Salted Choc Chip Cookie AUD2.50

*Really interesting and an idea I'd too would like to replicate*
Sourcing from local produce, Pigeon Hole is a must revisit. Their beef ribs were superbly prepared and their other breakfast dishes inspires for your own home creations. Their sweets were delectable and rich, and really showcased the local produce. A fantastic place for breakfast/brunch.
Click here for ABBA location of Pigeon Hole, 93 Goulburn Street, West Hobart TAS 7000, Australia

Barilla Bay Oysters

(Located just outside of Hobart Airport 18.2km)
The cheapest oysters to be had from .
To-Go Menu
The cheapest oysters one is going to find in Hobart. Though not as juicy or big as those from Bruny Island, but for 11.90AUD a dozen for oysters to go, these prices and quality can't be beat.
Click here for ABBA location of Barilla Bay Oyster Farm, Australia 1388 Tasman Highway, Cambridge TAS 7170, Australia

Ordered on

25thSep2015 and 26thSep2015

2 Dozen Oysters to go AUD23.80

1AUD for a lemon.

*Man, the take aways are really cheap. Oyster though a little small, but were good with a fresh squeeze of lemon. A value buy and a good stop over just after landing or en-route from Hobart to Port Arthur.*

Ball&Chain

A really cosy environment, especially seating at the extended glass house area. A really nice place to have quality steaks with amazing char. I asked the chef how he obtained such a beautiful and even char. His response was the char is achieved naturally with the charcoal. Amazing.

Every main order comes access to the salad buffet which of decent quality and a fair spread. Their cold pastas salads were good too.

Ordered On

25thSep2015

Bone In Rib Eye AUD52 600grms AUD2.90 Jue Forestierre Sauce (Medium Rare)

*Really good. Tender and sweet especially nearing the bone. I'd be gnawing of the bone if it were such a classy place. The sauce in all honesty was a little disappointing. A little clumpy and probably too much flour added.*

However, the Woschester sauce by Lean-To Kitchen which came on request with the scotch fillet was absolutely to die for. Smokey, sweet and a little sour. I don't usually ask about a sauce, but upon first taste, I just had to have this one, which the Restaurant didn't have any for sale. (The only other place that I ask about their sauce is at The Grill House JNB on their BBQ sauce which can be bought). I later went on an all out hunt to search for this, later to be found out as silver placed winning Sauce! Got me a batch only at the Tasmanian Airport!*

Scotch Fillet AUD37.90 Extra AUD4.90 Carpetbag Steak (Rare)

*The scotch fillet doneness was ok, but it was a little cold, possible attributed to the lack of heat lamps or prompt service. The carpetbag (oysters in steak) were done really well. Not over cooked and still retained the taste of fresh, delicious oysters.*

Total 102.50AUD Fed2
We were comparing the steaks here to Hog's Breath. Pound for pound they are pretty much the same pricing, with Ball and Chain edging the latter slightly. However, for the ambiance, quality cuts, amazing char and of course the superior salads here, Ball and Chain takes the cake. A great place to end of a holiday.

  11. The railway system in Kuala Lumpur is state of the art to put it mildly. The railway system joins the airport to the city center also check airport transfer in kuala lumpur while also having a mono rail and a raised railway to service other parts of the city.
