Day1
20Sep2015
Arrival at Hobart and settling in

We touched down in Hobart at approximately 1pm and only checked into travel lodge at 3pm. after a short visit at the weekly farmers market (Farm Gate)

Click here for Hobart - To Stay as well as data plans. For international flights coming in from Melbourne, domestic flights require individuals to clear immigration through the international terminal and a short walk to the domestic carriers.

Farm Gate
(8.30am - 1pm Open Sunday only)

Visited on 20Sep2015
950m form Travel Lodge Hobart

A single, blocked out street that sells farm produce with a small section of eats. Not a whole lot going on here but the Super Bowl of markets in this quiet town is definitely at the Salamanca Markets 8am-3pm (Opens Saturday Only reviewed below). Don't bother with this one, but it is conveniently located next to the main shopping street to get your data plans if required during your stay.

Day2

21Sep2015

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
(2.5km away from Travel Lodge Hobart)

Enjoy a packed breakfast on the open lawns and take pictures of the flowers from all over. It is a pity that the highway separates you from the river but the hill on which the garden sits on, allows for a fantastic view. Just be careful of the fearless local wildlife looking to grab a bite.
Special mention goes to the Antarctic enclosure, housing native plants from the region. Though small, it did leave a unique and strong impression.

Cadbury Chocolate Factory

Marketing at its best. The brochures seem to say more than there is actually going on. Apparently because of the stringent laws of health and safety standards, especially so in the food industry, factory tours have stopped since 8years ago. They seem to neglect that portion in their brochures.

All there was at the factory was a 12min video with a presenter going through chocolate production and answering questions. Sure they advertised free samples, but it's merely a miscellaneous pool of chocolate treats.

Just making a visit here is completely not worth it. Interestingly this Cadbury Factory gets their processed cocoa from Singapore and produces all of the Bar Chocolates for Australia on its premises.

The one thing that makes a trip here worth while are definitely the chocolates which are hugely discounted! Like 50% or more. Enjoy and go crazy. Not buying chocolates? Then forget about visiting this place.

Tasmania Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

Beautifully placed atop the hill, and accessible via car or ferry (to and for Hobart city), this cool underground structure houses a number of interesting pieces.

I felt that the entry price was a little steep and would be more reasonable at about the 15AUD range but others felt a gold coin donation was sufficient.

*Pictured above is a mechanical art piece that replicates the human's digestive system. It feeds twice a day, and even excretes once daily.*
Art is very subjective but the underground concept and space were both really cool.
The interior is something reminiscent of the bat-cave. I myself am not a huge fan of modern art, but this is definitely one of the more impressive ones by way of its location, design layout as well as installations.

Mount Wellington

Take a nice scenic drive to the top of Mount Wellington for an amazing view of the town of Hobart. Pictures speak for themselves and it's absolutely worth the drive and view. We targeted to be up there at around sun down, the golden hour for some spectacular sights. Don't go too late as rangers were setting up to restrict access at about 5.45pm onward.
*An interesting warning for all that fancy technology.*

ABBATip:

- Temperatures maybe low but it's the wind chill factor that gets you. Dress appropriately. We were freezing up there. The strongest winds recorded was over 110km.

- Park rangers started to close gates at approximately 5.30pm and rounding up the

remaining tourist from the peak at approximately 6.15pm.

Day3
22Sep2015
Salmon Ponds
Open (9/10am-5pm)

Fish feed AUD2 a bowl.

*picture of the elusive platypus*
The Salmon Ponds seems to be more of a living museum than an actual farm. It's got a resident platypus which is incredibly hard to spot, but we did catch a glimpse of it. However the moment it went under, it was never to be seen again.

A reasonable stop over for a chance to see all Salmon/trout varieties and for those who have the appropriate licenses, to fish from the river behind and BBQ on-site.

The ponds aren't as big as one would expect, but it is located in a serene location with good eating on site.
Pancakes by the Pond
Ordered On:
22Sep2015 at Salmon Ponds
Salmon crepe with cheese, tomatoes and spinach.
*Local Tasmanian smoked salmon. A fresh lemon squeeze goes perfectly with the smoked salmon, savory crepe and something that I'd take home to try.
Salmon Pâté
*Not too strong Flavored and a little sweet. The lightly toasted bread was a good touch.*
Hot Chocolate
*Never disappointing especially when its cold outside*
AUD35.40

The Salmon Ponds are a great stop for breakfast/lunch. Their savory crepes were good. I didn't get a chance to try the sweet crepes though but they came recommended as well. Its a nice place to have a walk or fish by the running river and literally feed the fishes. Worth a drop by and definitely stay for a meal.

Mt Field National Park & Russell Falls

AUD12 per person without car.

One of the Tasmania's most loved national parks in Tasmania, this place offers trails for visitors of different skill levels. From casual walks to the adventurer in you. Trails were easy to follow with pretty accurate estimates on duration required to complete them.

We opted for the leisure trail, involving
Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls and the Tall Trees Circuit.

*Equipment that by cross referencing the angle, you can tell the height of the tree*
Absolutely fantastic, and the passing showers added to the beauty of the forest. Cooling and stunningly scenic, a slow walk allows one to enjoy the sounds of nature. Well worth the visit and a walk. There's eats at Waterfalls Cafe but nothing really to scream about.

Waterfalls Cafe
 Ordered On:

22Sep2015 at Waterfalls Cafe
Chicken, sundries Tomato and Gucamole AUD9.50
Toasted Tassie - Tasmanian smoked salmon, sundries tomatoes, spanish onion, capers & kng island Brie AUD11.50
Chai Latte AUD3.90
*A nice cups actually. Thumbs up!*

Sandwiches were pretty okay, nothing special, but definitely have a bite or packet to go before exploring Mount Field National park. It's one of the many national parks in Tasmania and this is one is not to be missed.

Day4

23Sep2015
Getting there
Ferry Timings
Departure
7.45, 9.30, 11.05, 12.05, 1.45
Return from Bruny Island
2.15, 3.15, 4.30, 5.30

Getting across from Kettering, 30AUD per car, passengers included.

Bruny island is a self contained community with a primary school and local produce. As mentioned in the Cadbury tours above, due to stricter health and safety regulations, the production side of the foods may not be viewed up close and personal. This only leaves the retail sections available to the public.

Apart from some pricey adventure trails on the other side of the island, the rest of Bruny offers home stead style food production. No large factory grounds, or tons of freebie, but rather several small quaint outpost for small food bites.

- Oyster Restaurant Get Shucked (10am-5pm)
*A very nice area just in front of Get Shucked where many have had their oysters to go, to be enjoyed by the beach.*

The cheapest oysters ever. Came here twice, once on the way up and on the way back. Whacked a total of 42 oysters between the two of us. Overdose for sure. Many have taken oysters to be enjoyed by the scenic beach.
- Cheese Company (10am-5pm)
Not a whole lot on going. Merely the samples and we were pretty much on our way. There's some nice outdoor seating in the tranquil environment.
- Penguin Rookery & Lookout
A nice look out point between the two main bodies of Bruny Island. Perhaps penguin watching was not in season hence the quiet beach.
- Chocolate Factory
More of a chocolate shop with pretty good chocolate.
Bought some chocolate coated coffee beans.
- Smoke House and house of whiskey(9.30am-4.30pm)
For the whisky drinkers. 35AUD for sampling of 4 or 10AUD for 1 sampling.Sullivan's Cove was marketed to be as a Whisky Converter. Non drinkers have become drinkers, and its even converted whisky drinkers to their label.*
Island Taste Platter (for two) AUD75
A selection of locally produced, gourmet delights, including Bruny Smoked ocean rainbow trout, smoked Bruny island Wallaby and Honey Soy Chicken. House Marinated Mussels, House Pate's and Pastes, served with warm bread and house chutneys.
*A tad expensive for the very pretty platter though. But for the setting and view it's in, fairly reasonable. The trout was really good as was the Wallaby. You would have gotten about double the amount by ordering the same smoked foods, taken right out the packaging.*
Things move slowly on Bruny. In fact, a drive around seems to suggests that it maybe going into some financial problems. The Airplane tours had gone out of business and the Oyster Restaurant was putting its business for sale.

Perhaps an over night stay on Bruny would be more worth it. The island is quite big but can be covered within a day. We had covered half the island, arriving on the 0930hrs boat and returning on the 1415hrs ferry.

Day4
24Sep2015
Pirates Bay Lookout

Click here for ABBA location of PIrates Bay Lookout
Don't just drive straight for Eagles Hawk Neck as this slight detour to the side gives you the best view of the bay and of Eagles Hawk Neck.

Eagles hawk Neck

Viewed at ground level, there's little to be admired really, but at its narrowest point it's 100m across and it's geographic location in relation to Prison Life.
Click here for ABBA location of Eagles Hawk Neck

Tasmanian Devil Unzoo
The initial reaction was, wow that was an incredibly steep entry charge, but having been visited unzoo, the price was fairly justified. The unzoo fights for the conservation of the Tasmanian devil, whose population is being afflicted by cancerous diseases spreading through its populous.

Tasmanian devils are their staple, but they do educate the public on local wildlife, many of which are care cases.

Tasmania is the only place in the world that still has Tasmanian devils in the wild and seeing them feed as 'naturally' as possible was absolute fantastic.

The visit is educational, informative, and good for at least 2-3hrs of explorations.

It is worth to visit each of the Devil's feedings as they were each done differently.

Ticket entry for locals, is a life time pass, and for others, a full day pass for others.

Port Arthur

A steep entry charge for this world heritage site. A lot goes into the upkeep of the place and I would recommend dedicating a half to full day to enjoy the place.

The introductory tour was really good and gave you an overview of which of the buildings you'd like to visit first. Furthermore, the ticket does come with a short cruise that gives a very scenic view of the Harbor itself and historic landmarks. The cruise comes with a very helpful running live commentary that enhances the ride absolutely.

Worth the visit, but definitely either allocate more time to the site or visit over two separate days. Ticket entry is valid for two days. There are other options which extends the ticket validity to two years.

Day5
25Sep2015
Tasmania Museum and Art Gallery
(Free Entry)

Fairly decent spread of artifacts, though their natural history section could be more in depth. Defiantly more history and art gallery and its relatively small compared to other big city museums.
Click here for ABBA location of Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Dunn Place, Hobart TAS 7000, Australia

Shopping Day

Day6
26Sep2015
Salamanca Markets(SAT ONLY)
400m walk from Travel Lodge Hobart

Featuring well over 300 shops, its definitely the gold standard of street markets. Each of the stall there selling something different from one another, and not having a lot of repeats!
*Street Performers*

Loads of street eats to be enjoyed as you enjoy the shops.
An absolute must visit! Remember its only available on Saturdays from 8am-3pm, so try to plan your visit around then. 2-3hrs would be enough to enjoy all the shops there. One of the best street markets I've gotten the pleasure to enjoy visiting.
Return journey to Hobart -> Melbourne -> Singapore
