Creatures, listed as one of 2016s best new restaurants. CreatureS takes a unique spin on a predominantly Peranakan menu.

The Desker road area has in recent times, undergone a revitalization, rejuvenation project to introduce trendy new joints. CreatureS definitely delivers.

Staff here don’t have a uniform and it was shared that the owner wants a relaxed, organic vibe and interaction to the place. That relaxed dining experience does shine through with the staff.

CreatureS takes a modern twist on the traditional, and its reflected throughout their decor, cutlery and food presentation as well.
Edward who tended to us was knowledgeable of the menu and able to answer any other question posed to him (Opening hours, concept behind the restaurant as well as food preparation) . It was a welcome change to have staff knowledgeable on the product and would like to assume this to be consistent throughout.

Item Tim SGD13
Classic peranakan Duck and salted vegetable soup boiled the old fashion way.

*A strong start of things to come. Broth is hearty, rich and definitely been through hours of boiling to reach the layers of flavors. The sweet tomato was smartly cooked separately to prevent disintegration. With the basics down to a T, only great things to look forward to with the next dish. The portion is a little small for the single serve at the asking price.*
Ah gong fried chicken and ah ma noodles sgd23

Crisy Fried Chicken Leg with Garham Masala, served with chinchalok mayonnaise, accompanied by La-mien tossed in fried shallot and light soy.
(one of their signatures)

*The noodles were a nice simple concept. The oil from the fried shallots just coats the noodles the right amount. Served with fresh chilies a nice pairing to the perfectly breaded chicken. The chin cha lok mayonaise is more of a gimmick and doesn’t really go with anything really. It seems like a good way to intro foreigners to chinchalok.
Urban baba ayam buah keluak SGD23

Chicken stewed in an intense all fresh ingredient rempah and flesh of buah keluak, served with a ball of buah keluak flesh separately sauteed with minced prawns and pork, nonya chup chye and steamed rice.

*As described. A good spicy ayam buah keluak dish. The buaj keluak could have been served separately so that its flavor doesn’t get overpowered with the spicy chili. That creamy pate is absolutely stunning with the plain rice but was unfortunately masked by much of the rempah. Its an overall large serving and would have fed two with another plate of rice.
Creatures Crayfish hokkien Mee SGD28

Royalty of Local fare – fried noodles in rich fragrant prawn broth served with fresh crayfish, tiger prawns and squid, topped with crispy pork lard, Japanese fish roe and home-made sambal belachan. (Limited supply or long wait times due to the nature in maintaining the freshness of the seafood.)

*Wow. Just an impressive serving. With the exception of the squid rings, the fresh cray fish and prawns were cooked just right. Sweet and
Durian cake 10sgd/slice
(Also in short supply according to staff so order early)

Pandan sponge, pandan vanilla
Chantilly cream and mao shan wang durian cake

*The sponge cake is crazy light and the can’t-go wrong-fresh durian makes it a fantastic dessert. One of the more impressive durian desserts to have come across. A must MUST order and not heavy at all!*
Tiger mint tea 7*Pretty okay. A light minty aftertaste.*
Tumeric latte 7

*Nothing special really. The Latte was on the cold side. If it were piping hot, the flavors from the cinnamon stick would have added to the drink. Fancy name and high price.*
Fed 3 at about 40SGD A head. Portions could have easily fed 4.
Share the mains, but definitely go for the desserts. The mains are interesting but not over the top wow. I'd return to try their other mains and keep in mind that sharing the mains is recommended. Its great that they allow for take-aways. No reviews yet on the starters, but the two teas tried so far are just fancy names with high prices.

Overall, for the ambience, serving sizes and asking prices CreatureS is a fairly priced restaurant. Look to budget around 30sgd a head. CreatureS is well worth a revisit with friends, or for out-of-towners to explore a modern Peranakan take on food.
