Xuan Xuan
(Researched for good street side bbq eats in Hanoi)
Authentic table side Vietnamese BBQ
Free Wifi Avaiable

 *Full house at night.*

Ordered On:
05Nov2016
The mixed meat combo of beef and goat udder

*There's a fair distribution of meat to vegetable ratio. Both white and spring onions were
refreshing with the meats. Its an interesting combo to add ladies fingers, tomatoes and eggplant but it works! Their spiced dip with lime, complimented the meats really well and will be incorporating into home barbecues in future.*
Fed 2 at 220,000VND about 13.50SGD

Simple eats for an afternoon snack. Since its a traveling food fiesta, it'd best to order a
single portion so you get a sampling of more stuff. Who knew solid fuel could be so
effective.

*Ordered on second visitPork, beef and Goat Udders combi*
Fed 2 second night at 240000dong About 14.95SGD

Cafe Giang
(Researched must have coffee in Hanoi. Known for their egg coffee)
Free Wifi
Don't be conned by the first shop outside that shares the same address as Cafe Giang.
Only upon crossing the road, was there a small side alley that leads one about 10m down a walk way to Cafe Giang.

The place is a 2 storied coffee house with a sheltered second story. Each section
leading to a larger area, a mini adventure onto itself to get there!
Ordered On:
05Nov2016
Cafe Trung (Their signature Egg coffee HOT) 25,000dong/ SGD1.55

*It doesn't taste custardy or eggy at all. Without knowing what it really is, one probably won't know that there's egg in there. It is however much frothier than your average blended joe and that's probably what the excitement is all about. Nice but not mind blowingly great.
Worth the try and the place was packed at 1530hrs with different tour groups. This style of coffee is popular with many tourist and featured on other blog sites as well.*

PHO 10
(Supposedly one of the famous ones in the heart of Hanoi.
This multi story pho joint
serves up nothing else but beef noodles.)
Ordered on
05Nov2016
Tai Chin (Mix of cooked and half cooked beef) 55,000d SGD3.40

*Broth is tasty and the noodles are nice and smooth. The noodles don't taste over
processed. Simple eats among tourists and locals alike.

Talking to our fellow table guests, they both had different opinions. Korean tourist preferred another famous pho joint up north. Whereas the local said this was the most well known and best around the old quarters.*

Decent pho, but my personal preference is to have it with basil and bean sprouts. This is probably the more original version as opposed to the glocalized versions that span the globe.

Mien Luon

72 Cau Go
Cau Go lane is known for its seafood.
Fried eel glass/ normal noodle wet/dry
(Recommended to us by fellow travelers, who were in turn introduced this place by their
couch surfing host.)

Go local for the truly authentic experience, it'll be road side eats with no proper shop lot
or name. Mien Luon just means eel noodles and I'd thought it was in one of the secret
alleys like cafe Giang, but its right there by the street!
Ordered on:
5thNov2016
Was recommended by fellow travelers to try the dry version!
Dry eel noodles

*Absolutely loving the sweet tangy sauces that go together with the fresh herbs. Great
flavors and fantastic with a squeeze of lime and chili flakes. The order did however get loss in translation as they prepared the soup version at first. The dry version is actually served with clear noodles.*
40,000d SGD2.50

Well worth it and a must try. To fellow Singaporean travelers who shared this joint said, this was their highlight meal out of their 8 day Vietnam holiday.

OC Nong
78 Cau Go

Cau Go Lane is known for their seafood

(Purely walked into this stall, just down the row from Mien Luon reviewed above)

Ordered on:
5thNov2016
Bowl of white clams with iced tea.

Total: 105,000d Sgd6.45 Fed2
*Reallllly loving this dish. Will defiantly try cooking like that. Lemon grass, lime leaf, chili
and ginger, combine to form the foundation for the broth. A refreshing broth, with a slight
tinge of warmth from the chili. The sweetness of the clams really shine through and enhances the whole broth. Best!*

Well worth it! Am assuming the rest of the shell fish dishes go for about the same
pricing. For that respectable serving size and having only one semi-fresh clam, its worth
the order
.
Second round on another visit. You can oder half and half!

150,000d 9.36SGD*The white clams are still the all time favorite and the only one that comes with broth. The snails were par boiled perfectly in the flavored broth. They were even accommodating to do a, without chili dipping sauce! Worth the visit for street side eats.*
ABBATIP:- Not all boiled shell fish stores have the same concoction of boiling broth. Others have reported their broths to have the addition of pineapple and ginger. Explore the other stalls for they may have different flavor profiles they use for their broth.

46 Cau Go restaurant
(pure walk in)
Cau Go Lane is known for their seafood
 Ordered on:
06Nov2016
2 Oysters 30,000VND each

*The oysters were okay. Not super fresh but not over cooked either*
1 clam 30,000VND each (Suspect it to be a bait and switch) was charged 70,000VND
1 shellfish 30,000VND each (Suspect it to be a bait and switch) was charged
70,000VND

*Leaving price aside, its a little like having bamboo clams.*
Along the seafood stretch, this place got premium seafood like crab, large clams and prawns. These are comparatively pricier. The herb, nuts mixture though enjoyable, over powers the natural sweetness of the seafood.

All right place, but be sure of the prices before ordering as we both heard a different
quote as opposed to the final bill.
Beer corner
Cross junction of Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen

The famous beer corner. One is there to just soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the night with kharkhees (friends). Beers here are cold and start from as low as 5,000VND larger. This cross roads of beer pubs is where the party's at. Beer and cigarette girls
move about busy patrons pushing sales. Drinks here are a steal and the atmosphere
relaxing and fun. An inviting location to just hang out with friends.
Cha Ca La Vong
14 Mon Ngon

Free wifi available.
(This place was both researched and
came recommended again from local met at Pho10.)

Cha Ca La Vong is famous and known primarily for their grilled fish dishes. As we set down after ordering, we saw another Cha Ca La Vong across the street and weren't sure if we hit the right one. They both share the same address. On their menu they claim to be the famous one but who knows really.
They are a little slow on their service. If you're in a rush you may want to reconsider
your options. The table next to us didn't get their orders even after 20mins of waiting
time. Our bill too took sometime to be finalized as well.
Ordered on:
6Nov2016
Grilled Fish 160,000VND SGD9.85

*Love it. Fish is fresh. Nice firm texture and their usual spring onion, dill and onion
mixture works beautifully together. Rice noodles are then mixed with fish sauce, soy
sauce, peanut and fermented something to deliver distinct Vietnamese flavor profiles.
Great dish for sharing and to enjoy.*
Seafood spring roll 25000VND/piece SGD3.10 total

*Greasy and not really what we had in mind. One can pass on this.*
Beef Noodle Soup 35000VND SGD2.15

*Simple morning breakfast.*
Total 285000VND SGD17.85 Fed2

Have a taste of classic Vietnamese delicacies with Cha Ca La Vong. Good dish but we
don't know if this is the famous one. The other one across the street is much smaller and more authentic in its setup than this commercialized counterpart.

Banh Mi 25
(Recommended by others and known for their bread loaf with meat.)

Ordered On:
06Nov2016
Mixed (Pate, BBQ pirk, jamon and sausage) 25,000VND

*They do take the extra care to toast up the bread slightly, but overall nothing special. Some fresh vegetables along with roasted meats.
Simple street eats that's seen everywhere *

Cafe Mai
Free Wifi

(Cafe Mai is recommended by Vietnamese bloggers and by online reviews as well. This
is the place to get authentic Civet cat Coffee.)

They have an attached shop to purchase coffee of your choice and can come as
coffee concentrates or pre/post grounded beans.
Ordered On
06Nov2016
Cafe Phin PARIS(Civet cat coffee) MAI 95,000d SGD5.85

*This maybe one of the best drip coffees had. Phin Paris has a deeper layers of flavors  and may very well one up the Vietnamese drip coffee had in SFO
If in doubt of random places selling civet cat coffee, this place reported by others and trusted to serve the real deal. The first press is always the best. They do give hot water refills.*
Cafe Phin Moca 70,000d SGD4.30

*Nice dark chocolaty flavour to it.*
Civet cat coffee powder at SGD95.30/kg
100g serves 5 drip coffee.

Cafe Mai for real deal, no nonsense coffee place. There's nothing much by way of
attractions around it but we came down after having visited Hoa Lo prison. (Click for full
review)
Ban Cha Dac Kim
(Recommended by others and known for their pork noodles. I also think this place was made famous by Obama's Visit to Vietnam)

Ordered On:
06Nov2016
BBQ pork noodle soup and spring rolls

140,000VND SGD8.60
*The BBQ pork had some char flavour with an interesting sweet soup. As usual the
fresh herb condiments worked well together with the dish. The raw garlic and chilli
condiments were a nice add. The spring rolls had more filler than actual meat. A good
fry to the spring rolls still.*
Best seats are at ground floor looking onto the streets. The communal noodles and
fresh herbs are a little questionable by way of hygiene but guess its all in the Hanoi
dining experience. Go to the right restaurants as the one opposite just copied and
replicated the original's restaurant.

(The smaller one pictured on the right is the counterfeit)

Newday restaurant
(This place came recommended by the concierge at MK hotel. Newday serve dishes which are reasonably priced and featuring much of Hanoi's classic dishes.)

Ordered On
06Nov2016

Pork-ribs with special sauce newday style 95k VND

*A little salty and taste like hainanese style pork chops. *
Deep fried chicken with lime sauce 65k VND 4.10SGD

*Nice lime saucy, but its more of chicken skin only rather than chicken. Its the nicest
dish at the table.*
Steamed clams with lemongrass 65k 4.10SGD

*The stock is relatively blend. Clams are okay but Roadside stall, 78 Cau Go reviewed
above wins hands down with their superior salt dip and stock.*
Spinach with garlic 35k 2.20SGD

*Pretty decent but its slightly salty.*
Total 313000VND SGD19.24

Their dishes are very reasonably priced. Most dishes are a little on the salty side. Its
more home style cooking that doesn't break the bank. Alright but not great!

Com Ga Food Corner

Ordered On:

35000VND Fried rice with BBQ chicken

Click here for ABBA location of 2 Lý Thái Tổ, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
Located just across from Emerald Waters Hotel, the place serves up more classic Vietnam eats. A simple menu. The BBQ chicken is a little dry with a semi-sweet sauce glaze. It is interesting with the glutinous fried rice.

Road side squid bbq in front of chi dong xuan market
Bbq squid and green tea with lime 160000d sgd9.83

*A BBQ dried squid food stall open with a simple charcoal dish. A joyous snack but it could be better with a longer barbecue and more char bits.*
Banh Trang Bo – 25000d SGD1.53

*Taste like it looks. A mix of dried ingredients, glass rice noodles and sauces. Just
wanted to sample it but probably won't be ordering it again. Its like a cross between yu
seng and something?*
Street ice cream 30,000VND 1.80SGD
Mango ice cream

Its more of a show than anything else. Fresh fruit mixed with a cream sugar mixture.
The mango flavor is not that strong.

*The road side BBQ corn variety is that of the rubbery consistency.*
